Dr. Richard Kent
Dr. Richard Kent is a Professor Emeritus of Literacy at the University of Maine, a former Maine Teacher of the Year, and a nationally recognized scholar who uniquely bridges the worlds of education and athletics. Coached the Rumford Boys Soccer Team from 1979 to 1988, and the Mountain Valley Team from 1989 to 1998. Drawing from decades of experience as a teacher, researcher, and coach, his work explores how reflective writing and team notebooks can elevate athletic performance and help players become thoughtful “students of the game.” Dr. Kent is the author of nearly two dozen books across various genres, including sports-focused resources like Writing on the Bus and Writing Our Games. His deep connection to soccer, cultivated through years of coaching, frequently informs his work—most recently in his novel Sing On, Maine United!, which weaves together his experiences coaching soccer with his research on athlete journals.
